Have you ever owned a Breyer horse?

Have you ever owned a Breyer horse?

Popcorn checking out the Breyer model of HIMSELF! Leave a comment telling me about your Breyer horse experience to enter to win this Breyer of Popcorn!

When I was growing up, I had a small herd of Breyer horses. It would be hard to say which was my favorite. I loved them all. Elegant Arabians, long-legged foals, island ponies that walked right out of a book. No size or shape or color was wrong.

I took them outside to graze, built pastures out of sticks, jumped them over fences and blanketed them with hand made blankets sewn by my grandmother.

While I grew up dreaming of riding these horses, it never occurred to me that I would own an actual horse…that became a Breyer model. So when Breyer contacted me asking about making my horse Popcorn into a limited edition Breyer…the answer was an enthusiastic ‘YES’!

Now, as we approach Christmas I have teamed up with Equithrive to run a contest ending with one of YOU owning your very own Popcorn model. Entering is easy.

There are three ways. Simply answer the question I asked in the comments below either 1) in the comments below this post, here on my blog 2) on Equithrives FB page or 3) on my Facebook page

There will be a new question every day between now and December 19th.
The winner will be announced on December 20th!
I’m excited to read your stories! (and if you have time…reading what other people have posted is really fun!)

I had (& still have), a herd of Breyer horses parading across shelves. The one that meant the most to me was a solid black one I got back in the ‘80’s as a Christmas gift. When my husband was killed in Baghdad, Iraq in December of 2005, his solid black horse, Blackjack from the St Paul, MN Police Mounted Patrol, was used at his funeral with his boots turned backwards in the irons. After the funeral, I quietly laid my face against Blackjack’s, & thanked him for a job well done. In the spring of 2006, I got to ride Blackjack for a few moments. When I slipped from the saddle, I laid my hand against his cheek, looked him in the eye, & suddenly I was a kid again, playing with my first black horse. I still love them both-real or imagined-both have been milestones.

Thank you so much for sharing this…I cannot imagine your loss but I am aware of the healing power of horses.

I had Breyer horses when I was a little girl. My grandpa built them a red barn to live in. Actually cut shingles to size for the barn. They lived in there with my Barbie horse, Dalllas. Asked for a real horse every year til I was a teen, them when I turned 38 finally bought myself my first horse.

  3. Cassie on December 11, 2019 at 9:14 pm

Although there are many Breyer horses I have wanted over the years, I have never had one. I think Brea horses are very Reshel, especially as an artist, their anatomy and spirit seems to be captured so well by this company. I would love to have Popcorn as my first Breyer!

    • Sheryl on December 11, 2019 at 10:29 pm

I only got to dream of horses as a kid, begged to get a couple of trail rides, it wasn’t until I was an adult that I got to realize my dream to not just start riding but to take care of these beautiful amazing animals. The dream became even better than I could have imagined when I got my own mare, well, she got me! That’s when I really started to learn about horses and how to really ride, an ongoing journey! I have admired the breyer horses, they are beautiful, I especially like those that are models of real horses and the stories that go with them, Cobra is one that comes to mind for me, an amazing story, an amazing horse. Having followed Popcorn via your blogs I love that he has his own breyer! I of course would really love to have my mare as a breyer!! I’m still clearly living the childhood I didn’t get and loving every minute of it, mucking stalls, grooming ponies, riding, filling frozen hay bags and well, all of it, I appreciate every fun, challenging piece of it, at the end of the day I’m covered in hay and other things and I’m happy, my real life started when horses became part of it.

Unfortunatley Breyer horses were not around when I was young but I collected a lot of ceramic ones. My two daughters enjoyed geting new ones every christmas and they still have them as they approach the age of 50. That makes me pushing 79. Wow! Always had horses in our lives and the girls enjoyed showing. You actually had one of my reining/cutting bred horses for a month.

  5. Laura Johnson on December 11, 2019 at 8:49 pm

I never had a Breyer horse. I didn’t get into horses until I turned 50. I bought my son horseback riding lessons not realizing they were English riding and he wasn’t interested so I took them myself and I was smitten! Makes me sad that I missed out as a little girl but I have made up for it.

  6. Kara Crum on December 11, 2019 at 8:21 pm

Yes! I had over 200 horses. Not including our real ones. Some were Breyer. Some of my breyer horses I kept in their packages and I still have them today. I Love Horses!

  7. Cheryl on December 11, 2019 at 8:09 pm

I didn’t own a Breyer model until I was old enough to buy them myself. I still own them. One is of Two Eyed Jack because I owned a QH with his bloodlines ? He is still in his box, although I don’t know why I kept him pristine. I would never seen him.

Thanks for this contest! Popcorn is the color of my Missouri Fox Trotter which I love!

  8. BJ Kersey on December 11, 2019 at 8:06 pm

Yes I actually still have 4 of my Breyer collects les A bay mule, Grey Donkey, a longhorn bull and a paint horse. I would love one of Popcorn!

    • Sandi on December 11, 2019 at 11:20 pm

Yes, as a child growing up, I would get one for Christmas. I saved them all and gave them to my daughter. We both enjoy the love of horses. What an honor that Popcorn is going to help people to believe dreams can come true.

  9. Brenda Ferroni on December 11, 2019 at 8:05 pm

Congratulations Stacy and Popcorn! When I was a little girl, I had a hodge podge of different horses. Among them were two Breyer horses. My paddocks consisted of hard cover books standing on the edges of their hard covers and the barn fashioned from a cardboard box. When I could no longer justify playing with them, they sat display in honour, on a shelf in my room. When I became a Mom, I continued to save those two horses until one day my two daughters asked if they could play with them. That first Christmas , I built them a barn of repurposed wood paneling, dowels and ceiling fan chains. We upcyled the yellow prescription bottles for water pails, old face cloths became horse blankets and we used string to make ties for the blankets, fashion halter and bridles. After that I began buying them each a new Breyer model every year at Christmas. My youngest daughter saved a few of hers from her childhood and this summer, she passed them on to her youngest son. He has a special table in his room that he has set up his paddock and cardbord barn. His Christmas gift from me will be his pick of which ever Breyer model he wants.

    Merry Christmas!
    Brenda

  10. Carla Carrabino on December 11, 2019 at 8:04 pm

I always loved horses so as my daughter grew I gave her one a Breyer horse every birthday and Christmas. I later was the groom as she rode English and did Barrel Racing.
    I loved those Breyer horses!

  11. Marsha on December 11, 2019 at 7:57 pm

Yes! I saved them for my little girl, who played with them when she was little too. They’re now waiting patiently for the next generation horse-crazy girl in the family!

  12. Nancy Maurer on December 11, 2019 at 7:53 pm

I’ve never had a Breyer horse. I grew up a “city kid” and was never allowed to pursue my horsey dreams but ended up marrying a farmer (48 years ago) and have owned quite a variety of horses over the years. I currently own an aged Morgan/Welch pony mare, a 16 yo MFT mare that I bought as a yearling and still enjoy riding. I also have 4 minis that I enjoyed training to be kid quiet therapy horses.
It would be fun to share a “Popcorn” Breyer with the grandkids

  13. carol vale on December 11, 2019 at 7:43 pm

Hello, I have owned many breyers and still display them. I love to buy the ones that represent the different breeds I have owned

  14. Leah Sinclair on December 11, 2019 at 7:34 pm

Yes I had a leopard appaloosa and had a matching Breyer leopard appaloosa. He was a beautiful horse, certainly tried his best with me lol. I love your videos and blogs Stacey. Thank you for them, they inspire me all the time.

  15. Marlene Shirley on December 11, 2019 at 7:28 pm

Yes. I currently have 21 of them displayed above my kitchen cabinets as decoration. And a few more here and there around the house. All acquired after getting my first horse at age 40. As a little girl, there was a big willow tree in the back yard with a branch that was just perfect to throw a blanket over and tie a rope as reins. Spent many hours there.
I was at RTTH when you and Popcorn met the first time. Outstanding!!

  16. Fay R on December 11, 2019 at 7:22 pm

Yes! I gave three very old ones to my granddaughter. A black appy mare and her baby as well as a palomino. I also have my granddaughter in the Breyer kids club. The legacy continues 🙂

  17. Katie Bachhuber on December 11, 2019 at 7:07 pm

No, growing up I didn’t know Breyers existed. I have however purchased 4 for my 4 year old granddaughter. One every year.

  18. Katie Downs on December 11, 2019 at 7:05 pm

Yes I love Breyer horses! I used to play with them all the time when I was a kid. I had two barns, a couple pastures, and even a round pen for them! I still have them and am planning to save them for my kids down the road. I didn’t know Popcorn had a Breyer model! That’s so cool!!

  19. Peg Schoon on December 11, 2019 at 6:56 pm

Yes, I too owned Bryer horses. My favorite is hard to pick, but I do own a live granddaughter of one of the Bryers that I have.

  20. Debbie Heidemann on December 11, 2019 at 6:54 pm

    Hi Stacy !
No, I never owned a Breyer horse, they sure are beautiful ! I was given one black and white paint horse with a saddle and chain for the reins. I still have that and it sits inside a hutch – one of those special memories I have held onto. It was given to me in my younger years and was well played with. I did come to own a black and white horse so thought that was pretty neat – they matched ! Congratulations on the honor of Popcorn as a Breyer horse !

  21. Geralyn Hawk on December 11, 2019 at 6:49 pm

Yes, I owned many Breyer horses!

  22. Jeff Long on December 11, 2019 at 6:41 pm

My wife had a few from childhood and I been getting one just about every year for her for Christmas, so having a rare one like your giving away would be great addition to her collection.

  23. Kristina Jarrell on December 11, 2019 at 6:37 pm

Yes I have had Breyer horses!
I had names for each horse and had a whole herd of them. I loved them, they were definitely worth it! I also had over 100 schleich horses which are a little smaller than breyers and used to spread them all out in the basement and spend hours playing with them haha!

  24. Laura on December 11, 2019 at 6:26 pm

Yes, my favorite toy ever as a kid. I dreamed of being a horse momma all my life. It took me 50 years, but that dream became a reality. Still have my Breyer horse collection and each one brings back wonderful memories ?

  25. Kim Kelly on December 11, 2019 at 6:26 pm

I still have my collection of my Breyer horses in my basement. My grandpa loved horses too and each year for my birthday and Christmas he would go to the local tack store and pick a new one out for me. One year for Christmas he made me a barn to put them in! I still have the barn as well. Now I have a few Breyer ornaments on my horse themed Christmas tree. The closest I ever came to owning areal Breyer horse is I once owned a grandson of Hollywood Dunit.

  26. Melanie Gosch on December 11, 2019 at 6:19 pm

I too owned some Breyer horses as a child . I continued the tradition with my own daughter whose collection is still at my house for her children and cousins! My husband pinned a colts leg twice and glued many tails. My oldest granddaughter now has a horse of her own,in part due to playing with the Breyer horses at my house I am sure.

  27. Pam Millspaw on December 11, 2019 at 6:13 pm

I collected horse statues when I was young, but that was long before Breyer’s. They were all porcelain and none made it out of puberty with me. I now have a darling 8 year old granddaughter who is a horse lover. I would love to have Popcorn.

    • Susan S on December 11, 2019 at 8:39 pm

Oh yes I had at least 2, a gray Arabian mare and a rearing stallion. Not sure what happened to them. I have no 2 legged children, mine all are 4 legs and a tail variety. And I have been thinking of a gift for a 27 month old and a 19 month old, niece and nephew. They both love the horses their mothers have and I am thinking I will get them each their own Breyer horse. Thanks for the idea! ?

  28. Nancy Edwards on December 11, 2019 at 6:10 pm

Oh, I did have the Lone Ranger and Tonto but not sure if they were Breyer or not.

  29. Nancy Edwards on December 11, 2019 at 6:09 pm

Not as a child myself because I don’t know if they were around then either, but my daughter had a herd-probably 20 plus and now her boys have them and I have a few of my own now too!

  30. Philomena on December 11, 2019 at 6:08 pm

I had several Breyer horses when I was small. Five of them were mini scale, two of them were regular sized foals, and the last one was a black stallion which had the daintiest legs. As a matter of fact, I think they’re still in my closet!

  31. Dai Dayton on December 11, 2019 at 5:53 pm

Yes and now I have handed them down to my grandsons

  32. Linda Howell on December 11, 2019 at 5:50 pm

No, When I was growing up I didn’t even know what a Breyer horse was. I got the cheep pot metal ones at souvenir stands, the ones with a chain running through the mouth for reins.

  33. Allyn Salisbury on December 11, 2019 at 5:43 pm

I never had a Breyer but I had the Barbie horse. Played with him more than Barbie. We had a rocking horse on springs that we could ride. If you went fast enough you could hop around on it. Probably how I got my good seat!

  34. Linda Warn on December 11, 2019 at 5:42 pm

I was an only child and remember sitting up in our attic playing with all my “horses”. I always dreamed of having a horse but didn’t get to own one until I was 55. I love my boy and we’ve been together 11 years.

  35. Megan Bean on December 11, 2019 at 5:40 pm

I have a herd that fills a shelf, plus some. I also have enough Breyer ornaments to almost fill a full-sized Christmas tree. Still collecting.

  36. Diane Jackson on December 11, 2019 at 5:36 pm

Yes, I have owned several Breyer horses and still have most of them. I would entertain myself for hours with them. i still occasionally buy one if it has a particular meaning to me. I still have my Zippo Pine Bar breyer horse sitting in my den and Doc Bar on the filing cabinet in the hall way. I still enjoy having them sitting around.

  37. Carole Boegli on December 11, 2019 at 5:35 pm

It was always a dream to own my own horse back when I was a child, but it just never happened till much later in life. I played with lots of toy horses though and my young daughter got gifted quite a few Breyer horses due to my passion for them ??
To be able to own Popcorn would be just absolutely wonderful ?

  38. KELLY BOISVERT on December 11, 2019 at 5:34 pm

Yes! I loved playing with my Breyers. I still have them… a lot of them. ? I doubled my collection when I inherited my Aunt Kim’s (Ivan was bred and raised by her). That is soooo cool that Popcorn has a model!

  39. Amanda Saxton on December 11, 2019 at 5:29 pm

I didn’t learn about Breyer Horses until I was an adult. My fiance purchased our now horse, Beckham, as birthday gift a few years ago. Beckham has been the best birthday gift in the world. Acquiring Beckham has been the best adventure which led us to learning about Breyer. I now have roughly 8 different horses, a custom Breyer Barn, hand painted and customized and several accessories. You would think I was ten years old girl but I am 45. I h ave Justify and American Pharaoh on my desk at work and my co-workers know I am horse crazy. They are a great conversation piece and I have learned living in Washington DC that there is a great deal of people here who own and still ride. My goal is to attend Breyerfest one day to experience all the activities and see the horses. I love the fact they contacted you to create your own horse. I would love to have an exact one of mine but that cost is more than buying a new horse. I would rather buy a new horse to go along side Beckham.

I am a huge fan of yours and one day hope to meet you and learn how to be a better rider and owner. From one Midwest Michigan girl to another Midwesterner thank you for all of your encouragement and your love for horses.

  40. Becky McAllister on December 11, 2019 at 5:29 pm

Yes, and I still have my favorite on my dresser, a beautiful black appaloosa with a white spotted rump. (#165 I believe). I didn’t play with dolls as a child unless the dolls were riding.

  41. K Rae Travers on December 11, 2019 at 5:25 pm

as a child I did, and I still DO have a slew of Breyer model horses… some from over 50 years ago and I still LOVE them all ! I still have my all time FAV even tho it was severely broken. I’m still heartbroken to see my Smokey, in pieces, but I keep him anyway.

  42. Jenny Wood-Outhwaite on December 11, 2019 at 5:23 pm

I had lots of horse figurines but I don’t believe I had any Breyer horses. We lived a bit rural and my closest sibling was 5 years older so I did spend a lot of time playing with toy horses. I had plastic ones and ceramic/china ones, rubber ones, stuffed ones!! Everywhere we went I’d pick up a new one I swear!! LOL One of my favourites was a giant stuffed foal (size of an actual mini foal) that was laying down. I slept with it every night!

  43. Ginger Gray on December 11, 2019 at 5:21 pm

Yes, and I still have most of them.

  44. Joanne Haberman on December 11, 2019 at 5:17 pm

I am the mother of a horse crazy girl and like you she spends hours making cardboard barns for them, “jumping” them, “showing” them, putting tack and blankets on them. Like you she has a whole herd, each with their own names, stories, likes and dislikes. The imagination that these toys creates is amazing.

  45. Cyrene Olson on December 11, 2019 at 5:09 pm

I had a lot as a kid, and still have a few on the shelves that were never played with.

My barbie dolls even rode mine when I was a kid. I had make believe horse shows with home made ribbons. Great days.

  46. Joann on December 11, 2019 at 5:03 pm

No, but my friend had a palomino one that we played with.

  47. Loretta on December 11, 2019 at 5:01 pm

Yes!! I have several of them. Every once in a while I’ll still get a new Quarter horse one. I also have the 50th Anniversary edition reining breyer horse. When I was little, my siblings and I would also enterian ourselves for hours by building stalls and pastures. We even had a breyer sized driving cart!!

  48. Leslie Welles on December 11, 2019 at 4:57 pm

Yes!!! I had quite the herd as a kid and thankfully my parents saved them so I’ve been able to pass them on to my 2 horse loving girls!

  49. Vanessa Thornburg on December 11, 2019 at 4:57 pm

Oh yes, I owned several Breyer horses and played with them for hours and hours over many years. We had many adventures together. My Breyer horses and Thunderbolt were my favorite childhood toys.

  50. Cathy Sweany on December 11, 2019 at 4:15 pm

No, I’ve never owned a Breyer horse. I’m not sure if they were around when I was a kid. However, I did have a small and very precious herd of china horses. Couldn’t play with them but they were pretty. Some almost Breyer size and some miniatures. I also had a toy horse named Thunderbolt that Johnny West rode. He was a good foot or so long. I had several others like him and my grandpa and grandma built me a barn and corral for them. I did try to ride Thunderbolt and I broke his leg. Dad pinned it and i think he is still in mom’s basement!

    • Janette Dunne on December 11, 2019 at 5:25 pm

YES I do own one, only one, but it is very special to me..I’m From Australia, and I bought my buckskin pinto mustang from Brighton’s Saddlery in Denver CO, when I was there visiting with my son in 2012 who was in the Aust.
