Heaven’s remuda improved by one fine mare on February 8, leaving this planet one short, with the passing of Roxy (aka Whizards Baby Doll), best known as horsewoman Stacy Westfall’s bareback and bridleless mount. She sustained traumatic injury after apparently becoming cast in her stall sometime during the night of Feb. 5.
Many will best remember Roxy from a video that went viral on the Internet in which Stacy rode her with no bridle or saddle, winning the Freestyle Reining Championship at the 2006 American Quarter Horse Congress. The performance, coming less than a month after Stacy’s father passed away, touched an appreciative audience worldwide. One person quite moved by the ride was TV personality Ellen DeGeneres, who invited Stacy and Roxy to appear on her show. Roxy, ever the lady, gave Ellen a memorable ride, and charmed the live studio audience by coaxing peppermints from Stacy.
Roxy first came to Stacy and her husband, Jesse, for training as a two-year-old. “I was the first one to ride her,” Stacy recalls. Not long after her arrival, the Westfalls had an opportunity to buy her, but couldn’t afford to. “One of our other clients had asked us to keep an eye out for a good horse, so when we couldn’t get Roxy, Jesse suggest he should.” That client, Greg Gessner, bought Roxy and kept her in training with the Westfalls.
“It was the perfect partnership,” Stacy says. “Greg believed in us — in Roxy, and Jesse and me. There aren’t many owners who would let a fairly unproven trainer do something as crazy as ride in a competition with no bridle, let alone saddle. But he always wanted what was best for Roxy. He loved her.”
And Greg never looked back. “I truly feel blessed by God to have Jesse and Stacy in my life working with me and Roxy. I never once doubted their abilities or judgment. And while Roxy was my horse, it was always clear she loved Stacy.”
Roxy was ten months pregnant carrying her first foal on the night she had her mishap. Greg had her scheduled to move to a foaling facility in time for her early March delivery date, but since the move had not yet happened, she was in a large foaling stall at home. It was Greg who discovered Roxy in her stall early on the morning of Feb. 6. Although she was standing, she was favoring one back leg, and her nose and one knee had abrasions, most likely from the struggle to get up after having laid down. The stall showed signs of that struggle.
Greg called Roxy’s vet, Dr. Curt Honecker, who stopped by and began administering medications. As the day progressed, and Roxy’s discomfort grew, Greg and Dr. Honecker decided to take her toValleyViewAnimalHospitalinDover,Ohio, where Roxy is well known and loved by the staff.
“Ever heard of the saying ‘You get one good dog in your lifetime?’ Well I think Roxy may have proved that true in the horse world. She truly was a once in a lifetime horse,” says Ashley McCahill an equine receptionist at Valley View.
Over the course of the next couple of days, Dr. Honecker and the staff did their best to make Roxy comfortable. Sadly, the tearing and shredding of the ligaments and muscles that occurred when Roxy struggled to rise was causing dramatic swelling in both flanks and upper stifles. Even in a sling, with morphine in her system, Roxy was unable to stand. Recognizing her rapidly progressing condition and severe pain, Dr. Honecker and Greg chose to humanely euthanize her.
“It was a hard to make that decision,” says Greg. “But she didn’t deserve to be in pain. Knowing it was the right decision made it easier.”
The Valley View staff did their best to save the little, sorrel stud colt she was carrying, even though he was 30-days premature. They performed a C-section, but after two hours of oxygen support, the colt failed to respond and was also euthanized.
“I would have expected this mare to outlast my career,” Dr. Honacker says. “We’re going to miss her. Staff and visitors used to sneak back to have their pictures taken with her.”
A registered American Quarter Horse, Roxy (by Whizard Jac out of a daughter of Gunners Rambo) leaves behind a legacy of four offspring, all of whom were carried by recipient mares. But perhaps her greatest legacy is the glimpse of what is possible between a horse and a human — the image of she and Stacy, forever imprinted in the minds of those who have been lucky enough to witness them — two creatures, human and horse . . . bound by trust and love.
“What made her special was that she was willing to give so much of herself,” says Jesse Westfall. “She allowed herself to be developed into an amazing partner, a work of art. Not many horses, or people, are willing to do that.”
Roxy will be greatly missed by many; the Valley View staff, Greg Gessner, the Westfall family and all those inspired by her big heart.

Feel very blessed to have met Stacy and Roxy and see them perform. An amazing duo, a relationship that as horse owners we will often only dream of having. Our hearts are breaking along with all of you. Deepest sympathies, The French Family
I watched that video when it went viral. Just knowing a horse and rider could achieve this level inspired me. I will always be in debt to both Stacy and Roxy. They have clearly left their mark on the equestrian world.
I am praying for all the family and friends who were involved with this GREAT mare Roxy!!! May you all heal in time but remember Roxy always.. god bless
My condolences are with the family. I went through an identical situation last march with my horse who was also my soulmate. He cast as well and tore ligaments and tendons to the point beyond repair. I know the pain you guys are going through and I wish the best for you all. Roxy was an unbelievable horse and will go down as a legend. <3
I still to this day, have and watch that video of the two of you riding bareback and briddles. My heart goes out to everyone that loved Roxy, her fans as well. Love her dearly. God Bless.

R.I.P. Whizards Baby Doll
She was an amazing horse and I know she will be missed.
I was lucky enough to witness Stacey and Roxy in one of their last shows at Equine Affaire in West Springfield. I will never forget the beauty of seeing horse and rider perform as one. So sad about the passing of this beautiful and special mare.
So sorry for your loss Stacy…my heart goes out to you, your family and Greg. She will be missed by the entire Quarter Horse world! Roxy was certainly one of the Greats!!!
Wow, I can’t imagine the loss you all must be feeling right now…I was in awe the first time I seen your video on YouTube, it always brings tears to my eyes at seeing the communion of one of God’s greatest animals with human, but now it will bring tears for a different reason. May everyone’s memory of Roxy help dim the pain of her loss…
So sorry for your loss. Your famous video has inspired me to ride Western at the grand old age of 65. I truely enjoy it.
What a amazing horse she was! I always enjoyed watching her and Stacy….
What a wonderful horse!! So glad that we all got to be better for having seen her!! Sorry for your loss, you will be in our prayers!!!
I sat here and cried for your loss as I read the story. What an amazing partnership that you had together and now you have those memories to cherish. I am so sorry for your loss, she will be missed not only by you, but by those of us that have followed your journey together. God Bless.
I too was heartbroken……for Babydoll and Stacy, she “Stacy” has always been my inspiration, I am just a backyard horse woman….everytime I need a boost I just go to Stacy’s & Babydolls youtuble..performance and watch it “live like your dying” and even after maybe 100 times of watching it I still get goosebumps….Love them both!
we know the pain of losing a special equine freind, ours was a big ole paint gelding and a blond girl, he would do any silly thing she asked of him. They are never out of our hearts
Words cannot express the emotions for the loss of a beloved mare lilke Roxy. May the memories of the good times ease your pain.
THANK YOU – the depth of your loss is truly the measure of your love!!! It is now time that we, the general public, hold you up in our hearts and our minds, as you have given to us, the incredible beauty and the courage to know, a pairing of this kind is rare, but possible!!!
An amazing mare, they give so much and inspire so many people when it comes together like it did for you. I hope in time when the grief lightens you can find comfort in thinking to have had the pleasure of sharing amazing times with her. I am sorry for your loss.
Stacy: You and Roxy were the living testament to the beauty and grace one can achieve when horse and rider become “one”.
Through the tears I am trying to smile, as you said to do. Thank you so much for the memory.
GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU AND MOST OF ALL ROXY MAY YOU RIP UP IN HORSE HEAVEN. I SAW THE VIDEO OF HER AND STACY WHAT A TEAR JERKER IT WAS TO THE BEAUTIFUL SONG BY TIM MCGRAW (LIVE LIKE I WAS DIEING). I WISH I COULD TRAIN MY HORSE TO RIDE BRIDLELESS IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL.
oh wow i’m in tears i’m so sorry for your loss.

You where very special to have been choosen by her to develop such a unique relationship and she in return was already living in heaven and paradise with you as a devoted owner.
Stacy, I am so sorry for the lost of Roxy. I only wished you would not have had her bred. There are so many unwanted horses in this world that needs a loving home. We do not need to bring any more horses into this world. Roxy would probably still be here with you if you would not have bred her. These horses are more precious then most people. I am a horse person for 55yrs, and I will always have a horse even when I cannot ride, then I will rescue them and just giving them a loving safe warm home. Roxy rest in peace and hope you are running the green pastures in Heaven. You deserve the Very Best. Peace Roxy!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s absolutely breathtaking to me how unbelievably cruel you are. “Roxy would probably still be here with you if you would not have bred her” — are you kidding me?! You seem to be blaming the Westfalls for a freak accident that could have occurred even if Roxie had not been pregnant. Even when horses are under the best of care, sometimes things just happen. Many years ago, my best mare at the time, who was only two months pregnant, broke her leg trotting in a pasture one morning (she slipped and fell) and had to be put to sleep that day. Does that mean I should have kept her “safe” in a stall all her life, where she too could have gotten cast? (By the way, my yearling did just that last week and needed help getting up.) Another of my mares suffered delayed anaphylactic shock and died in her stall only three hours after my vet had given her routine antibiotics and anti-inflammatories for a minor respiratory illness (the autopsy revealed that it was a freak reaction, and no one’s fault). Yet another of my mares died of liver failure and encephalitis after a vet gave her a tetanus anti-toxin injection for a hoof abscess when she stepped on a nail (although I told him that she was up to date on her vaccines — he said it was simply “insurance”). I’ve owned dozens of horses in my life (usually many at one time — I have 12 now), and I know that sometimes things are just out of our control or don’t go as planned/expected or just simply happen, despite our love, meticulous care and best intentions.
And how idiotic to say that “we do not need to bring any more horses into this world.” If none of us bred our horses, the world be devoid of horses within two or three decades, after all the existing ones died off. I, for one, would not want to live in a world without horses, although apparently you wouldn’t mind.
Stacy, I have not read any further past this post (I’m too angry to go further without responding), but if this person has not yet apologized for his/her callousness, ignorance and Pollyanna attitude, I will do so for him/her. Please do not remember, even for a second, the inane comments of someone, as who Mark Twain would have said, opened his/her mouth and removed all doubt as to his/her being a fool.
Yes, Liz, I was really taken back whe I read the part about NOT BREEDING ROXY….that was so MEAN, I thought that Stacy was going to reply to that one. But she is so sweet, so I guess she just read it with tears in her eyes, deep down knowing that there was NOTHING WRONG with her (Stacy) breeding Roxy, You are correct, if she was pregnant or NOT, ANY HORSE can get cast, ANYTIME of the day OR night!!! Thank you for your commet!! My sister had an adorable registerd Paint and she opened up the gate latch with her nose, got out and ran in the busy street and got hit by a truck and died on the spot…..THINGS HAPPEN!!! But naturally we were all brokenhearted.
Sometimes holding my tongue is the best thing I can do. I will allow people to post though so others can comment:)
Some horses (like other animals)do need to be bred they are one of a kinds that may pass on their wonderful personalities and make us still have some of them to live on.But some people do breed for the money and do produce many unwanted horses.People buy and sell horses too much ,maybe that’s why Stacy had success, stick with one and have a partnership to last.
I can not believe you had the nerve to say that. “Roxy would probably still be here with you if you would not have bred her.” That was extremely rude and very unsentimental. No one cares that you are a horse person of 55 years or what you plan to do with your life. Stacy is by far a better horse person than could ever hope to be. It was also not her decision alone to breed Roxy. Horses are bred all the time without complications, how could Stacy, Jesse or Greg have known? One last thing, there are also too many children in this world who are neglected and suffering and need a loving home, but most couples still choose to have their own kids. Your own children are apart of you and it is amazing to watch them grow and to see how much they resemble yourself. It was the same thing with Roxy. Her colt would have been an amazing little guy with so much of his mother’s qualities. Their barn is like a family and that colt would have been a great addition to their family. I would really appreciate you not going around blaming people for the unpredictable and harsh ways of life. It does not help anyone in the situation.
What a terrible thing to say — in this case – you should have kept your opinions to yourself.
Really????????????? Thanks for your support. So sorry for your loss, but let me stomp on your heart some more and tell you its your fault the horse is dead. You are a complete ASS! I lost my horse in march because I could not afford an 8000 dollar surgery to fix her. But I guess that is my fault for not being rich. Shame on you, Shame on you!!!
Why would you put this here? MEAN! Roxy was the kind of horse that you do breed, her genetic were beyone spectacular. This is not some backyard breeding churning out subpar horses.
Your letter is basically, 1) I’m sorry. 2) It’s your fault. 3) Here is all the amazing self righteous things I do.
I apologize to Stacy in advance for sullying her blog, but I cannot let this one go. You, Linda Long, are an inconsiderate idiot and probably voted for Obama. What a complete ass you are.
How dare you? I have been involved in dog rescue for years and, while I don’t believe in backyard breeders or those that breed “cockapoos” or the like, I fully respect a breeder’s right to further the breed through AKC standards. Just as I respect a horse breeder’s right to further a pure Quarter line. Roxy’s line deserved to be carried on and for you to blame Stacy, who didn’t even OWN the horse, is just pure meanness and selfishness. I see you aren’t responding to any of these comments, you coward.
you are an idiot~!
To try and breed to have a legacy is what we all want. To have another much like her would be phenomenal. It is a chance horse owners take when they breed, they are not selfish, but rather want to carry on what they had…..I do not know Stacy but believe she had a true connection ot Roxy..what do you think Roxy would have wanted???
Roxy could have suffered the same outcome whether she was bred or not.
Tell me, have you ever fed a stray cat? By doing so, you are helping that cat survive and breed with other strays therefore bringing more cats (and disease) into the world. Maybe we don’t need more horses in the world, but we definitely don’t need more cats!!!
Don’t pass judgement. I’m sure Stacey and the people who loved Roxy have suffered enough.
Just finding out about Roxy… And I offer my condolences to the Westfalls and Mr. Gessner for their loss. I cannot believe some people can be so RUDE as Miss Long…. Any kind of accident can happen and no matter how much you say the should of , could of’s and shouldn’t of’s in the end it is still a terrible accident. So shame on you Miss Long, just shame on you. And to you Stacy, I love your videos. I dont own a horse at this time and I love horse’s, well, all kinds of animals, but horses have always been one of my true favorites. So sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry for your lost Stacey and people like Linda long should not blame it on you!!!!
re – Linda Long I am sorry to be replying so late in the year I was gathering information on Stacy Westfall when I came across this response. Unbelievable! How callous can you be, unless you were trying for shock and awe to bring attention to yourself. I hope you see this response to your response to a very heartbreaking situation. I work on a breeding farm where horses are selected and bred to outstanding stallions each year. We have at present 9 broodmares of which only 2 are in foal for 2013 keeping in mind that we don’t need to breed every mare every year we use a rotation system and the mares that are sound for riding get ridden while they have time off from more matronly duties. I find people like yourself quite often accuse others of things that they are guilty of themselves. So that being said you have a good day now.
Wow, this comment is not only disrespectful, but inconsiderate as well. Horses get cast all the time. Thanks to their decision, there are four beautiful reminders of this amazing mare. Shame on you for saying such negatives things and blaming the death of Roxy on people who loved her. Stacy and Greg are NOT to blame for this.
Idiot !!
What an unfeeling thing to say ….I can’t believe you can be so stupid !!
I am horrified that you Linda ..can be so insensitive and cruel to Stacy.
Cate
Maybe if your parents hadn’t bred, Linda, the world would have one less insensitive, ignorant person…
my heart feels broken, beautiful angel from God, pure love… this precious horse and all animals are the purest of souls and the closest to God…
It is unbelievable to me that someone feels that they have the right to say something so cruel as this. This accusation is completely riduculous and Linda you should feel ashamed for saying it.
Stacy you have been a huge inspiration to me. Your horsemanship motivates me to strive to keep learning and truly understand the horse. I can only hope that I will have the opportunity someday to have an amazing relationship and connection with my horses as you and Roxy had. The videos of the two of you together bring tears to my eyes every time I watch them. Thank you for being my inspiration.
You are a complete idiot she bred her because she was an amazing horse and wanted to extend the legacy. Hopefully you have no children
Ms. Long, I wonder that you have the audacity to attack Stacy Westfall regarding the death of Roxy. Perhaps if you went back and read the story again, you might become cognizant of the fact that Greg, not Stacy, owned this wonderful horse and that HE was the one who bred her and had possession of her when she died. While you’re obviously very proud of your work with animals, as you should be, that is no excuse for your rudeness.
you are a complete ass. linda P.S. WE DONT CARE THAT YOU HAVE BEEN A HORSE PERSON FOR 55 YEARS OR WHAT YOUR PLANNS ARE.
This is mean Linda…
Are you out of your mind???? First. of all pregnancy has NOTHING to do with a horse getting cast…it can happen to all horses…shame on you and your uneducated insensitive opinion…
Linda, HOW DARE YOU! You do NOT deserve to have a horse…. an animal that is as caring, loving unconditionally, UN-judgmental, therapeutic, free…. I hope to never ever meet you or anyone like you! You selfish BITCH to have the edacity to post what you did! My heart breaks for the Westfall’s and their loss… Stacy thankfully can bite her toughen because many of us will stand up and behind her, an amazing women who lost an amazing horse (that I can not relate to, but some day will face myself im sure) I WOULD never wish this pain on anyone, horses SAVED me and people like Stacy inspire me… My heart is with the Westfalls <3
Linda how mean of you! How dare you be so cutting and cruel to Stacy! This is her page and you get on here and attack her and say she is to blame for Roxy’s death! I cannot fathom people like you! Can you even imagine the pain Stacy is feeling about this? You basically rubbed her face in it you idiot. Maybe your parents shouldnt have bred and made you…… Im so sorry Stacy, Im sorry for your loss and Im sorry that there are such ignorant and cruel people in this world. I too know the pain of losing a great horse. My QH Zac passed away 18 months ago, he had colic and i had to euthanise him. It broke my heart completely. RIP Roxy and Zac. 🙁
By the way Linda, Im pretty sure nobody here cares how long you have had horses, we all have horses, you are no better than anyone else, and you are CERTAINLY no better than Stacy!
You, mam, are an idiot! How in the He!! would you be able to love horses, as you claim, in the future without allowing procreation today? Of course, there are too many fools breeding for too many foals, but your comment makes absolutely no sense! You must be one of those flakes who just love pretty horse art? In the future, keep your nasty, stupid, insensitive comments locked in your own ignorant head!
I think we have all seen enough of LINDA LONG’s comment, it only gets us all upset to read it, I think it’s time to get it off. The Westfalls went through enough sadness and they are getting on with new adventures and new horses so I say GOODBYE to LINDA LONG, you hurt everyone, not just Stacy!!
Linda,
How dare you blame Stacy for Roxys death.. Did your mother ever teach you basic manners when you were a child… ie: if you cant say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. Keep your ignorant and rude comments to yourself in the future. If an when horse experts need or want your opinion, they’ll let you know…
Dear Stacy, Linda Long’s comments has really GOT TO GET OFF of here, she has caused enough heartache, anguish, hatefulness and disrespect, it’s high time she HIT THE TRAIL, THE LONG TRAIL! I know everyone would agree with me.
Agreed with the other people. The cruelty and ignorance of your response was beyond belief. Thank goodness that people like Stacy, or Roxy’s owner, breed the best of the best so that such wise and willing horses continue to grace this planet to share some time with we humans. May you never own one of them!
yes, Ruth I agree, Linda Long’s comment is as LOW as anyone can go!!! I feel that Stacy should have it deleted because she gets everyone upset.
I would like to apologize before hand to Mrs. Westfall for ranting. Although Roxy has physically left the earth, she still lives on in the many hearts you and her have impacted.
Linda- I have been alive for 17 years. I’ve owned horses for 12. Considering you have been around horses for more than 4 times as long as I have, I would think you would know what it is like to loose a horse. It’s like someone cutting a birds wings. They loose their freedom, their way to get away from predators; in our case, chaos. Their way to gather the things they need; in our case hope and sanity. Most of all their will to live. How do you think Mrs. Westfall feels about Roxy’s passing? Did you even take the time to think about it? The only thing you seem to care about, is breeding Roxy and if she hadn’t been bred she still be alive. 1) It was not Mrs. Westfall’s decision to breed her. 2) You don’t know whether not breeding her would’ve help or not. 3)It isn’t anyone fault that Roxy had to be put down. Her legacy had every right to be carried on through her offspring, So how dare you go around pointing fingers at ANYONE, especially Mrs. Westfall! You are wrong on so many different levels. Your arrogance DISGUSTS me. Keep your hateful comments to yourself.
WOW, your a really insensitive ignorant person. If people with ill tempered poorly built horses didn’t breed them them to make $500.00 we wouldn’t have an over population of unwanted poor mannered poorly built horses with health issues. those same horses cause people to be afraid of horses, therefore there are less homes for these beautiful animals. Shame on you for being so hurt full to such a loving woman while she is in morning and shame on you for scolding someone for breeding a wonderful mare. If you want to scold someone go find a crap breeder, and leave the responsible ones alone. God bless you and keep you Stacy, I pray the peace of the lord comforts you.
Ok, it’s time to DELETE Linda Long’s HORRIBLE comment, she has already upset Stacy and countless others with her rudeness and her unloving attitude ….BYE BYE L.L !!!!
You should be ashamed of yourself.
Even though this remark is 2 years and some months old, I absolutely cannot believe the absurdity and cruelty of your remark. The Westfalls loved that horse and she loved them. Expressing your opinion on anything other than her remarkable life is uncalled for.
I fully agree..I sent a message to Stacy telling her to delete Long’s opinion because it only gets people aggravated..she should apologize to everyone, especially to the Westfalls.
my heart aches for you i too lostsuch a mare in feb her name was diamond she was also ONE OF A KIND!!! i know your pain!!!!! we will never forget our sweet angels!!!!!! rip diamond and roxy!!!!!
My heart also breaks for Stacy, I also had a once in a lifetime mare, and lost her due to a tramatic injury while whe was in foal. She had to be put down and the foal was in no way far enough to make it either. You have been blessed beyond words to have known a amazing mare like Roxy, I am sure you know it too. I receive visits and rides from my best mare ever (Magic’s Black Dallia) Dallia in my dreams, and sometimes waking up with her smell all around me. I pray you also receive this gift. The rumada in heaven has def received some amazing mares! love and peace Roxie, and Dallia. <3
Iagree that Linda Long should not have written such a horrible, hurtful, and heart-shattering comment, she should feel ashamed of herself.
I just met Roxy this morning in a beautiful and moving video and now I find that she is gone from our world. I thank God for my faith that our animals continue to live though their earthly body is no longer with us.
I was very touched and inspired by the video of your championship ride that you dedicated to your father. Of course the information on the video was wrong and said that you were deaf and mute but I found the truth on your website. The inspiring part for me was not that you were supposedly deaf and mute at all. It was the beauty of the ride and the communication and “one-ness” that you demonstrated with Roxy. I will not soon forget that video.
May God bless you and prosper all that you do.
This is so sad, but so wonderful that you were able to experience the love from this awesome animal, I had to put my horse down several years ago, she will never leave my heart. It has been close to 30 years and it seems like just yesterday. Thank you for sharing this awesome experience with us.
So very sorry for your loss….. I am also trying to heal after loosing my rescue horse that was starved and beat when I pulled him from a kill lot a few weeks ago. He became cast in his stall during the night this week I found him down in his stall when I went to feed that am …..I tried everything to save him with help from my vet. He fought so hard and held on for 3 days but finally laid his head on me and just slipped away…. I am completely heartbroken….. The worst is beating myself up about it, although knowing accidents happen all the questions what if I did this or that or didn’t stall him that night etc…. that run through my mind just tears me apart …… I am so thankful I was able to show him true love after the years of abuse he went through but It still does not make loosing him any easier….
