By the time I take horses to expos with me, I take for granted that everyone knows who they are. For me, I have been working with them so long that they feel like part of the family.
Take Newt for instance. I call him Nephew Newt because his mother is a full sister to Roxy. Newt was born at my house….I was the one who ripped the sac off his nose and first said hello to him. So you can see how, now that he is four, that it feels like everyone should know him because he has been with me his whole life.
Newt is the horse I was ridding when I recited the poem at the Weaver Leather Freestyle Reining in October of this year.
He is also the horse that I have brought to Equine Affaire in MA to use in most of my demos and he keeps an eye on Jac….or at least he keeps Jac entertained!
Newt is actually Jac’s cousin, as their mothers were sister.

You are such a beautiful soul, I watch you on the videos and you are just so inspirational, I see the passion in you that I have always felt, I am 62 years old and I have always for as long as I can remember as a small child have always had this need and longing to have a horse in my life. I had a horse as a child, then after I grew up, got married and had children got away from horses. But anything horse would always pull me back in I could sit for hours and watch a horse event. Then in the late 80’s my husband and I found the horse passion in our lives, we were fortunate enough to find two half sisters and bought them as a four year old and a five year old. We call them “Our girls” and that they are. Any way I just wanted you to know that I so enjoy your videos so please don’t stop doing them you help this old lady live the passion through you, God Bless You!

It is a wonderful poem. I think the reason it is so good is that it is so true. Anyone who works with horses for a while will go through the very thing that you have. What defines us is how we handle the situation. Some never recover and simply get out of horses. I think the better option is to re-double your efforts as you have and take a while to get to know another horse or horses. It just seems to be the best way to honor our fallen friends is to promote and enhance the industry so other people will have the chance to bond with a horse. It is simple and difficult emotionally, but it is reality and every horse has a wonderful trait that you seem to fall in love with only if you open your heart to them. For me, it is rather easy, all that has to happen is for that horse to take a chance on me and take that first treat out of my hand and I am hooked. So, we have 10 what can I say, I love them all for their individual traits. I can’t explain it, nor could I ever, it is just something that horse people know and love. Some are closer and some are farther away, but everyone is special. So, keep your heart open and continue to love even if it hurts. You and Jack or going to do great!
