Your asking the wrong person! Let me illustrate….
Once for Christmas my husband bought me tickets to a fancy music thing in downtown Columbus. He also told me to go shopping for clothes. This might excite some women…but it struck fear in me. As the day approached I finally headed to the mall. Standing in the sea of clothes I was overwhelmed…so I phoned a friend.

I said, “Ann, I’m buying a black turtleneck and heading home.”
She replied, “No! I’m on my way, I’ll be there in 15 minutes!”
Ann successfully dressed me in a skirt and shirt that I never would have picked out…but really liked once they were on.
If in doubt…I call a friend. One of my ‘friends’ in the horse world is Suzi from Hobby Horse Clothing. Even before meeting Suzi, I loved her ‘color chart’ that helps riders match colors with their horses.
I see people wearing a wide variety of things. Some of it depends on the show with weekend shows generally more causal than the big shows. At weekend shows I will often wear a lightweight, feminine button down.
At the bigger shows, or if you just want to have fun, it is possible to see much fancier outfits. I have a couple of special shirts that I will only wear at big events because I would feel too overdressed at a weekend event.

Was it a fashion statement moment? Nope.
Actually, I went to hook my standard black chaps and the Chicago screw fell out, the chinks were in the same bag…I normally wear them for mounted shooting…but why not?
One piece of advice I got from K.C. at Charlie 1 Horse (my fancy hats) was something like….”Most people say you should pick one item to focus on; a fancy hat, a special belt, or a stand out shirt. People will say you should focus on one…but if you want to wear it all and you feel good doing it…then go for it.”

I showed IHSA for two years in the beginner and intermediate levels. When I started out I had some inexpensive Rods shirts and decent black chaps. By my second year I moved into the black shirt with an OU green scarf like the rest of the team.. I loved this look! Great for IHSA, and for some smaller local shows. I’m a college kid and can’t spend a lot on clothes (end of the day boarding my Standardbred geldings more important). But investing in those few good pieces has lasted me even once I left the horsemanship ring. Being comfortable with what you wear and understanding your price range and where you intend to go with it is key in my opinion!
I LOVE shopping…..as long as it’s for show clothes! Those are the only designer clothes in my closet. 🙂 I show American Miniature Horses at the local, regional, and National level. As you mentioned, I have a few extra-special shirts I only wear at Nationals because I feel overdressed in them for weekend shows. Right now in the mini show world, bling is the in thing: like literally giant crystals EVERYWHERE kind of bling. I’m not really that kind of girl so I tend to stick with a more classic look: some bling (mostly on collar/cuffs), colors that complement my horse, and if anything, sequins or glitter on the actual shirt fabric. I personally am much more confident in those type blouses than anything with excessive bling….and I’ve had nothing but complements on my attire. 🙂
Ughhhhhhh….. I HATE to shop….. and while we are at it…. could I just have a professional clothes dresser person to just campout in my yard??….I really need to be on that show that does makeovers for people that need help…..lol… Just give me some jeans and a tshirt and I will be fine… :o)
Can you write a post on how you introduce guns and horses? Even just loud noices. Or just the cowboy mounted shooting topic!! I love when people engage in many different disciplines with their horses.

Only attend 4-H shows here, they have to wear long sleeved white shirts, black or blue jeans, belt, helmut and boots. I think it’s great that they are all dressed alike so the clothes do not distract.
