I visited the NRHA Futurity to do some follow up videos with Jac. The National Reining Horse Association Futurity is one of the premier events the association hosts with a total purse and prizes totaling nearly $2.3 Million to exhibitors. The horses have to be nominated when they are born and then additional payments are made during the horses two and three year old years. I knew the payments had been made for Jac and that there was a chance he would be showing here.
I was initially a little disappointed when I talked with Jac’s new owner, Patrice St-Onge, and learned that Jac didn’t come to the show but that quickly changed. I respect Patrice for the decisions he has been making with Jac.
The first big decision he made was to geld Jac. We always knew that this was a possibility which is why we collected semen from Jac as shown in Episode 40. Pat felt that it was in Jac’s best interest to be be gelded. Sometimes a stallion will lack focus and the rider will need to repeat the lesson over and over because the horse is distracted. When I was going to college one of the main vets would say over and over, “A good stud makes a great gelding.” One of the points he was trying to make was that the horses often improve when gelded.
The other decision was to not bring Jac to the futurity. We all knew that Jac had missed training time and Patrice decided that rather that push Jac hard to get ready for this show he would save him for the future. I am very excited that Jac is with someone who is making decisions with Jac’s best interest in mind.

Crys… so this is the end… a couple pics of Jac… shrugs.. end of the training series… I so loved this series, I thought I had read every word at least once, how the heck did I miss Greg selling Jac? I am so upset. I thought it was kinda strange we hadn’t watched a video on Jac for awhile, but you were moving all around and I thought well, maybe this Winter with some down time from the road. Please let me know we have something to look forward too. The series transported me back to a younger time, when health did not hamper just walking across the Yorkie Patch. Where I could just imagine the touch and smell of the horse, leather and seasons on the horse. Greg has broken my heart.

I don’t understand about “payments” are made during the horses two and three year old years …. what does that mean??? …and also… who has the “rights” to the collected semen from Jac ??… Greg or Patrice St-Onge?…. Jac looks so mature in those pics… Really wish Greg would have gelded and kept him and let you ride him for years! ….. 🙁
To enter the show you have to pay to nominate when they are born and then you have to pay more to enter. Here is a copy of the payment schedule for entering this years show: “A total payment of $2,205 is required to enter the Futurity (either Open or Non Pro). The payment consists of an entry fee of $2,000, $175 judges fee, $10 meds fee and $20 video fee. Fees are to be paid in six (6) payments.”
Greg payed for the collection and paid the AQHA the fees to register the future foals, so he owns the semen.
I agree that riding him would have been fun. I will get to ride his niece (his sisters foal) next year as well as any others Greg breeds. Plus I can breed a mare to him if I want! Patrice said I could come visit Jac also:)
ohhhhhhhh ok….. kinda understanding the process….. thanx for explaining…. Newt is Maggies son? Lucy is Vaquero’s daughter? Hope is Vaquero’s daughter?? I am soooo confused….lol…. how many horses do ya’ll own……. if ya get the chance to answer???? Personal horses???
We sold all the way down to four horses: Popcorn, Newt, Lucy and Hope. My mom has my old horse Scrapper and Lucy’s mom at her house…and I’m never sure how to count them because they are kinda my moms and kinda ours.
sorry… but I have to ask something else… Greg said that Roxy had to many “buttons” for him to properly show her….lol…(that made me laugh when he said that in that video) … so Im wondering …did you or do you show new owners of your horses all the “buttons” on the horse?? .. did you show Patrice St-Onge all your cues with Jac?

I have to say I am upset to hear that Jac was gelded, He is to nice of a stallion. I felt I saw in your eyes that you may be upset with the new owners decisions also. I know many that have watched Jac’s progress will feel the same way and was looking forward to the futurity.
We have the frozen semen so I wasn’t upset. I actually gelded my stallion, Vaquero, and I won the Congress with him. I felt it was better for him because he could be turned out with others and he was happier. We only had a few foals from Vaquero…and we have much more semen frozen from Jac.
wish you still had him but seems he has a wonderful new owner! Happy to see you got to visit him 🙂
