Stacy’s Video Diary: Jac- Episode 31- A horse with one year of training

Jac entered training in March of 2013. This footage was filmed over several rides in March 2014, one year later. Total Training Time 120-125 hours

This video does a great job showing Jac’s physical training; lead changes, spins, slides and general understanding. What it doesn’t show as well is the mental connection.  To see that you need to watch Episode 26 or Episode 12 which explained what happened at the beginning of Episode 9 and then for a good laugh you can watch Jac drag me all over the place back in Episode 3. The things that happen ‘in the barn’; the mistakes, the questions the horse asks, how the trainer handles the horse and how the horses respond to the training often tells you more about the relationship than the ‘show footage’ will.

The purpose in sharing Jac’s story was to give insight into the training methods that I use. I do not claim that they are the only way to train a horse but they are a good representation my way of training. I do believe that the videos captured many of the moments that I have always wanted to share with people.

Working with Jac has also been a very personally touching tribute to Roxy. The  footage at 5:45 gave me chills…and again at 8:09.

“If you’ve ever wondered how Roxy and I achieved the partnership that we did … Jac’s journey will show you. All horses deserve to have this foundation and it is never too late to build it.”-Stacy Westfall

Does the video include more footage and information in it than your blogs did or is it the same?

Thank you so much for all your valuable information. I wish I could talk to you in person or over the phone to ask you a few questions. I know this may sound silly but maybe you could have phone appointments on certain days where people could pay to ask questions. Anyway I do have one question–When you are spiraling out do you use your inside leg as well as the outside rein? My friend and I were working our horses and I really need to work on flexing exercises–bending to the left. If I am just using the right rein to pull her out with no inside leg pressure it seems difficult for her to understand, but when I use leg pressure she understands to move out. Just wondering. I will be ordering the DVD soon!

Love the series, Stacy! Wednesdays are my favorite, just because of you – thank you for producing this! You have this amazing ability to capture the love and affection from your horses, while maintaining respect. Many trainers can get their horses to an “when I say jump, you say how high” level of training and unconditional respect… but when you look at their horse, it appears defeated. Your horses all master the same skills, but it is evident that they’re doing it because they WANT to! That clip, with Popcorn in the round pen with Jac – every second Popcorn was just waiting to act on your whim; and if given the opportunity, would love to be in the middle next to you. Looking at your recent episodes, Jac is just about there as well! Absolutely amazing.

Anyway, I love watching you train and already own all your other DVD’s; so I guess I’ll have to make room for one more! I was wondering, will the DVD have any additional video footage or commentary that we haven’t gotten a chance to see so far?

    • Stacy on April 28, 2014 at 6:07 pm

The video does have extra on it. I think it ended up being an extra hour and a half or a bit more. I am also hoping to do a companion book with it in the future.

I LOVED the Jac training sessions, I could NOT wait to see another one pop up in my e mail notification. This is something for all horse lovers , trainers and wanna-be-trainers! Wonderful & professional work, we all admire you and your commitment to get the best out of any horse, especially your darling Jac !

I cried when I listened to you tell about the little foal you didn’t want to let in. I wasn’t as strong as you and wasn’t able to “let the little filly in” that was all I had left when my mare died. I admire your strength.

Just to let you know that I so admire what you do and the gift you have. I don’t understand yet why when I watch you ride my eyes fill with tears and why I could barely speak when I had a chance to meet you in Chilliwack. I’m a tough ol’ gal and not prone to this reaction to things, not matter how sad or touching. I believe it’s because I am in AWE of you and the connection you have with horses. You touch my soul when I see you ride like a great work of art or a verse of beautiful poetry. Thank you on behalf of all horses. If they could talk, that’s what they would say. And thank you from me, maybe someday we will cross trails again.

that’s so much you have taught jac in a year, we (me and my mare) find it hard for years with a control of speed in canter and lope. you and jac.. that’s so fluid and rhythmically: nice to look at!

  17. Terri Anderson on April 9, 2014 at 3:32 pm

WOW!!!! Amazing! I have so enjoyed this video series, not only your training methods, but the growing relationship with Jac! Please continue with it….:)
