Ever wonder about horses in battle? Did you know there were no horses used during the French and Indian War?
In the Revolutionary War horses were used but did you know that the total number of horses and mules killed in the Civil War was more than one million! At the battle of Gettysburg alone around 1,500 died.
During WWI, “The value of horses, and the increasing difficulty of replacing them, was such that by 1917 some troops were told that the loss of a horse was of greater tactical concern than the loss of a human soldier.”
On a lighter note, today is not only the 4th of July, also known as Independence Day, but it is also my little mini’s birthday. She is aptly named….Independence, but we call her Indy.

thank you very much fr the awsome article. Since I was in tha 1st.Calvery while serving in Viet Nam. No we ddid not use horses but it was that service that first sparked my intrest in horses. I am still very involved with my friends from that time and have forwarded this to many of my friends. Hope they enjoy it as much as I have.

Dear Stacy, Hi! How are you? I haven’t met you yet but I did see the video of you riding without a bridle and that said you were blind. Glad you aren’t blind and glad that you ride so well and can train so effectively and humanely. My army experience has made me want peace. In response to the movie War Horse I started a business/non-profit called PeaceHorse, an international interdisciplinary school of horsemanship for 100 people in Montana in the summer. I seek 50 Americans and 50 foreigners, each sponsored by some corporation. My preliminary budget allows $1000 per week per student. I have thought that college student riders would be the best target market because they are reachable affordably and they would have time in the summer.
