LOVE: A visit to Last Chance Corral foal rescue

If you want to bring life back into focus, to feel more grounded, to know what is important and help someone else, I highly suggest volunteering at Last Chance Corral in Athens, Ohio.

In a barn on a hill you can surround yourself with life and death challenges that will remind you that life is truly a gift. There is work for anyone from mixing milk or cleaning stalls to washing foal bottoms or simply sitting and giving much needed love.

And that may have been the biggest take away I got from my recent visit to Last Chance Corral; food and care are needed but LOVE should not be underestimated. Many of the foals are sad or depressed…something that cannot be explained but must be felt.

All the foals I have been around before Last Chance Corral have been secure in their knowledge of who they were because of their mothers. At Last Chance Corral this knowledge of security and love must come from the humans and amazingly the foals respond.

This video is only a glimpse into my stay at Last Chance Corral. Spread the word…it might just help to save a life.

I support Last Chance Corral and love the work and admire their dedication. HOWEVER, please do not post any more pictures on FB depicting someone holding a rifle to the head of a little foal to kill it. TOTALLY NOT NECESSARY! People don’t need that to donate! They don’t want to see a little foal at the end of a gun! You want help? Donations? This is NOT the way to go about this. I was totally appalled at this picture. I will stop contributions if you continue using this tactic.

Where are you guys located at?

  3. Nancy Charest on April 28, 2014 at 6:49 pm

Thank you so much for highlighting the amazing work that Last Chance Rescue does with foals. I don’t meet the criteria for adopting, so I’ll be donating money instead, but I’ve fallen in love with a few of the foals in spite of myself. I still can’t figure out why no one has adopted Silhouette yet. I would if I could LOL.

Stacy?? ….I have sent a donation a couple of weeks ago to try to help with these babies….but I was wondering if you knew of a way to automatically have a monthly donation sent?? no one has answered my question about it…. I am sure they are busy and may not have had the time and I know you are busy toooo…. but I thought maybe you might know since you have been there and maybe could find out….. thanx!

    • Stacy on April 23, 2014 at 8:29 am

Lesia- My guess would be that you would have to look at the online donation form…Is that what you donated through? They also take Paypal but I don’t know if the ‘giver’ can structure the monthly allowance. You should take a trip there sometime….I’m already trying to scheme another trip there from Texas!

      • Lesia Lowe on April 23, 2014 at 11:31 am

no… I sent a check the first time…. but I thought it would/could be easier if I just did some kind of monthly “auto-pay”….
I saw the paypal but I am not to familiar with how that works…I have never used it before…. I will just send another check I guess…. girl I would give almost anything to go up there and volunteer…. from Louisiana to there is a long trip too…and I don’t think I could talk my hubby into that…lol…. thanx for the help…

      • Mandi on May 29, 2014 at 12:18 am

Any chance you can bring two foals back when you go up to visit? I am from Louisiana and would love to adopt two babies, but I cannot get up there. I guess a followup question would be if not, “do you know any rescues in TX or LA that adopt these babies?” Raised my first paint colt before giving him to trainer for a young girl who wanted to show but couldn’t afford the training! We would love to have new horse babies now that I am done with law school, so that when we have human babies, they can enjoy the love and joy a horse companion brings!

    • Nancy Charest on April 28, 2014 at 6:47 pm

Your bank can set that up or you can set it up yourself using the bank’s online payment application. You would set up the donation just as if it were a bill and the money would be paid to LCR every month just like your rent or mortgage.

I don’t know how to do this in PayPal because I’ve never tried to set it up, but you might be able to do it as a recurring payment.

I’m in Florida… I wished i were closer since i think this could be a nice experience. I have family with Alzheimer and this feeling about life that you are describing. I also near when I’m taking care of them.

Last year New Albany Middle School raised money for LCC and it was so much fun I even know an LCC baby who is at our barn who is being broke to ride for a little girl

What is the process if I would like to volunteer some time at the Last Chance Corral?

  8. Jan Pizzano on April 21, 2014 at 9:26 pm

If only there was a transport for these baby’s .I think more of them would get adopted ,i for one would love to adopt a couple .
That would be another way to spread the word and save a life.

I was a little Concerned about how many were in one stall. Also why is there sand in the stall when some can barely walk as it is? I am a huge advocate for all animals. I hope you can lessen my concerns.

    • Stacy on April 21, 2014 at 3:55 pm

The stall was open so they can come and go as they please, they choose to gather together. The stall was sawdust, the outside pen is dirt with good traction for when they play.

    Wonderfull!!! Greetings from Switzerland!

  12. Tarlawn on April 21, 2014 at 1:32 am

So sweet!…do these foals get adopted out to loveing homes or do they end up staying there? …they all see to be very comfortable and calm around people and seem to be desensitized to Many different things ,as well as seeming to be socialized well around the other foals. How do these foals end up at the facility..,what has happened to their mothers?

  13. tammy smith on April 20, 2014 at 10:13 pm

Love the video. Give thanks to the last chance farm for helping all those foals. What those people who do wrong by the foals moms is so upsetting. One day I hope it stops. The farm the babies come to for love an a good home are angles. I hope u always try to help as many as u can.

These foals will be worth their weight in gold.

  19. Kitty on April 20, 2014 at 5:57 pm

So sad. I hope they all survive and have happy lives. I also hope the evil people responsible for these orphans pay for what they do to all these innocent animals-the mothers as well as the poor little babies. Hopefully one day there’ll be a law against the cruel practice of stealing babies away from their mothers!

Again, thank you Stacy for showcasing Victoria and all the Last Chance family – two and four legged! It is hard to describe how it feel to be around this “family” – their commitment is so visceral. If you felt tears running down your face or your heart skip a beat watching the video – PLEASE give – your time, your money, tack, items for their Christmas party/auction, Attend the Christmas Party and give from your heart. Can’t say enough about Last Chance and what they do – every minute of every hour of every day….committed to horses (and all animals).
