I heard something a million years ago that changed how I view the world. Someone told me “When you look at another person, say to yourself “There is the person I WOULD BE if I had lived Their life so far.” Of course, I immediately thought “No, that’s not true, I would be doing better than this (?) person I am looking at, because I would try harder, do more, not hang around with addicts, get a job…” You get the picture. But the fact of the matter is, if you think it through, IF you were born to Those parents, and you had Those genes, and you had Those life experiences…You Would be them.
This is certainly not to say that we do not have control over many of our own circumstances, but it does have a tremendous bearing on how I now view the world. The end result in my own life now, is that I try to help the people in my own little world that I see are actually trying to help themselves, and I try to help myself by staying away from the poison people who will only drag you down with them. However, I understand now that blanketing all those people with a dismissive “It’s their own fault” is not really fair, because they are the person I would be if I had lived their life so far. Period.

And Martha Washington, George’s wife, said our happiness or or misery depends on our disposition not our circumstances. But a wee bit o’problem, is not a disposition a circumstance? And then Bobby Burns comes along talking to that mouse. Then, speaking of mice, along comes Johnny Steinbeck, and oh what a muddle. Could be that circumstances actually play a role, no? Bill Swart
